[ she is instantly reminded of like, several people she knows, which endears her to magnus immediately. she laughs, and throws her arms around his neck to give him her best shot at a hug. it's pretty good! she knows how to lean. ]
It just goes on about me killing people without context. So people keep acting like I'm a murderer or something, when really I just get attacked by a lot of people with swords all the time!
I didn't even kill anybody in my game, y'know. And I definitely could've!
Sort of. I was for a while - odd jobs, chain linked-in, that kind of stuff. But now I work for - [Pausing.] - I have no idea if you'll be able to hear any of this, but it's an organization that collects dangerous magical artifacts to keep them out of people's hands?
It's a longer story than that, but basically that's the gist of it.
Oh. That's - kind of how the Cobalt Soul rolls, too. [ beau does not understand the majesty of the chain linked-in pun but i do ] Why wouldn't I be able to hear that?
[And yeah, once it's obvious she can't hear static, nodding. Much more willing to try to explain shit.]
So, there's this big beautiful cosmic jellyfish from space! His name is Fisher and he's my friend. But if you feed him stuff - names, information, music - he eats it and the memory of it vanishes. If someone tries to talk to you about it, you'll just hear static unless you drink Fisher's juices and get innoculated.
The Bureau uses Fisher to keep non-members from knowing about it or its mission. But it hasn't been working since I got to this dimension.
[ she soaks all that info up, totally fascinated. ]
Whoa. A memory eating jellyfish. [ that's so cool... ] But it only works in the dimension it started in? Or maybe whatever is here is more powerful than whatever it is - Fisher? Can do. Kind of overwrites Fisher's power. Either way.
[ oh, and: ] The Cobalt Soul's the order I work for. They're truth seekers and balance keepers, basically. We make sure nobody gets too corrupt.
Yeah. Fisher's pretty powerful, but he's got limits. When you die, your memories come back - already knew that one.
[But if they aren't dead here, then it must be the dimension thing?]
But yeah, Cobalt Soul seems sort of like what I signed on for with the Bureau of Balance. You do a lot of punching to maintain balance and stop corruption? [That sounds good to him.] I'm kind of on the outs with the Bureau now for a bunch of reasons. But I did like the punching part.
Oh, it's kind of a whole thing. Personal drama. You hate to see it.
[He brushes it off, but he'll tell her anyway.]
It just turned out the director of the organization used to be good friends with us, but we had a different idea of what to do with those powerful magical artifacts I mentioned, so she erased our memories for a decade so we all forgot about the relics and each other and our backstories and she could do our plan. Then it turned out she needed our help to find them all so she hired us to work with her without unerasing our memories first! Typical workplace politics!
I've had some time to think about what she did, and I don't know if I want to get her back. I'm angry at her, and I don't plan on trusting her again if she doesn't really apologize, but I have an idea what was going through her head.
Yeah. And, well, what she did hurt a lot of people who are important to me. But me personally - if she hadn't done it, I would've missed out on a lot of important people and memories. So I can't be too pissed off on my own behalf.
[ same hat, magnus. ] There's always good that comes out of the bad. Gotta hold onto it as long as you can. Eventually those people and memories won't be there.
Not that I'm telling you anything you don't already know, I think.
I'm an open book, so. You wanna go get something to eat and we can trade more backstory? Might as well get really attached to everybody before we go and die horribly, right?
Maybe it sounds stupid, but I wanna get attached. I want to see everybody as a person before I have a reason to be suspicious of people. 'cause I don't want to play that game.

Brace yourself! [Going in for the hug!]

Yup! I get it. It's a quality hug!

Heh, thanks, I guess. You're not so bad yourself. I haven't looked at all the profile shit yet, but I guess I should, huh.

So what's the truth on yours, then? Other than the hugging part.

It makes you sound like a serial killer? [ wh ]

I didn't even kill anybody in my game, y'know. And I definitely could've!

I'm surprised that didn't show up on mine, actually. Are you like, a mercenary of some kind?

Yeah, it's a perk of the job. You're on the outs with the Bureau? Why? [ nosy!! ]

... That's fucked up? That's like, super fucked up. You can't just erase memories like that. Did you get her back for it?

[A little uncomfortable, but - ]
I've had some time to think about what she did, and I don't know if I want to get her back. I'm angry at her, and I don't plan on trusting her again if she doesn't really apologize, but I have an idea what was going through her head.

Guess you'd know her better than I would. Sometimes people do shit they think is right for everybody else without thinking it through to the end.
