And for what it’s worth, I agree and think Sanji was right. Getting us all together— is somehow going to be the key. So, I think we need your help with, um, our more gung-ho friends?
It isn’t as if any of us enjoy playing darts, or would do it unless we were forced - for everyone - to enjoy a good game of darts.
I guess . . . I guess I’m just afraid of what happens if I miss the dart board, the next time I play. Sure, it’s disappointing to lose a game, but when I have to leave the bar, there’s people waiting in the parking lot who are going to be, um, fucking pissed for how bad I am at darts.
[well. he lapses into silence for a moment, lifting a hand to rub the back of his head, searching for the words]
[. . .]
Well. . . I can't say I'm not a little-- mad about the way you guys have been playing darts.
[some of those losses still sting, after all]
And I can't say that people don't have a right to be angry, either. [. . .] But what I said to you the other night about it not being just to- uh. . . kick someone out of the bar for playing darts badly still stands.
It isn't just.
[on that, he is firm]
There's a time and a place to be angry. And if I can convince everyone to channel that anger at the right forces, and not the people playing darts, then--
Mm, I agree with Magnus - it's fair. And I think that's our best course of action. We can deal with people who are mad about how we played darts when we're out of the bar.
[AKIRA IS NOW HIS FAVORITE. He reaches out to pat his shoulder again, laughing, in a very fuckin tired way.]
I never want to see another detour again for as long as I happen to live, please and thank you. Beat me unconscious for my terrible dart playing if that's what it takes.
There are no good choices when every piece of the board is important to someone, I get that. I can’t— sit here and rank who is most to least important, loved, because I guess I’ve got my choices too.
But it’s important too to make sure that when you make a choice, you don’t start a chain reaction of people seeking retribution for that play in the game, adding to the chaos. There’s people who I think would understand the dart game, might even agree to play a round, but the people they’re leaving at the bar would lose their absolute bugfuck minds and take us all - and I mean all by everyone we’ve got asleep and waiting for us to find a solution - with them too.
And I guess, just, unrelatedly, I can’t die yet. I can’t— not when there’s still things to do. So I’m stuck. I don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s a shitty game, and I prefer pool anyway.
[a few people already come to mind, actually!! people who would lose their absolute shit if someone important to them died. perhaps that's what makes Akira so good for this position. . . he's hurt, he's angry, but he sees the bigger picture]
[and he refuses to sacrifice anyone for a petty, fleeting feeling of "justice"]
I can only protect one person per week, but. . . I'll do what I can to make sure you guys make it out of here alive.
[Yeah. This kind of thing is why he trusts Akira, but he shakes his head.]
That would be, uh, cool, but it doesn't have to be the promise. Promise you'll help us fuck this game up and form a super team. But keeping the roles alive - that's just a hunch, based on the gold sequins. I don't think we can promise that's the answer.
[having the option to be angry is the most important thing of all. and even more than that. . .]
[. . . he thought his role sucked for possibly putting him into a position as a killer. if there are people here who have no choice in the matter, then-- they're worth protecting]

You know that no matter how darts were played, there were still going to be people sad that they lost, right?
no subject
I know.
[. . .]
That sort of thing is unavoidable in a place like this.
And it's why I think you guys all got the shittier end of the deal.

Though by then I guarantee you I'll be too excited we made it out to be mad.

But at the end of it - they can be as angry as they want, so long as it means that they are there to do so. That is what I think.
